Lake Ontario, New York

Lake Ontario, New York

For my birthday, my husband and I left the kids and ventured up to New York. After spending the morning visiting various spots in Palmyra, New York, we drove to nearby Lake Ontario. We stopped in Chimney Bluffs State Park. It was our second trip to one of the Great Lakes. We've learned the Great Lakes have perfect wrapping rocks: they are large, oval and circular, and perfectly flat for wrapping.

We stopped in different spots in the park along the shore and Jason waded into the lake with his rubber boots while I spent the time combing the beaches. Jason looked for tumbling rocks while I collected flat rocks, pebbles and even driftwood for future art pieces.

Each of the Great Lakes have their own unique rocks. Lake Ontario is full of grey Basalt and red Sandstone, making the beach full of grey and pink colored rocks. The water was cold but calm. It was sprinkling the whole time we were there, making conditions ideal for rockhounding since the rain helped highlight the rocks' features.

We definitely recommend a trip to Lake Ontario, especially if you see looking for the perfect wrapping rocks!
